Ages 3-5: Sensory and cause-and-effect
At this age, kids are wired for repetition and immediate feedback — press a button, something happens; mix two colors, a third one appears. Look for kits built around simple cause-and-effect: color mixing, magnets, basic sorting and building. The "science" here isn't the vocabulary, it's the pattern recognition: I did this, and that happened.
Ages 6-8: Hypothesis and process
Somewhere around kindergarten to second grade, kids start being able to hold a question in mind before testing it — "I think the boat will float because it's light" — and check whether they were right. This is the sweet spot for kits with a light experimental structure: predict, test, observe, explain.
