Now, more than ever, there seems to be a strong gravitation towards STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in the world of education and learning. Naturally, I think we are all very much aware of the success that can come from following a career path in STEM. But what about those of us that are drawn to a creative path? Allowing our children to explore their world through a creative lens will benefit them for years to come.
The value of art is a fundamental part of social, as well as cognitive, development in young children. In a quote by the Wellarts Association, it states how “expressive art is a tool to explore, develop, and practice creativity as a means to wellness.” Same goes for our little ones. Art allows a child’s active imagination to take flight and venture into a new and colorful (yes, pun intended!) world that they have created all their own - or with the help of their peers, and this is where they learn about collaboration!
Collaboration promotes a freedom and independence that is important for them to experience at such a young and tender age. Children are also posed with the task of decision making, what colors do I want to paint with today? Can I mix these two colors together to create a new one? This allows for the child to hold some authority and accountability and see how their choices affect their world! Simple things like holding a paintbrush and scribbling with a crayon are an important element to developing a child’s fine motor skills.
Art education allows for children to practice visual learning and work on their visual-spatial skills. The benefits of learning art are seemingly endless, and have even found that it also helps with emotional development. Even at the toddler and preschool age, your child can start building their emotional intelligence - how awesome is that?! Lastly, and probably the most obvious argument, will be having fun while learning and growing at the same time!
